Can't activate professional licence

I have obtained a prof licence [thank you :-) ].
I have attempted to activate the licence several times now it via the 'Switch license' dialog, but the software reverts to the Student version.
I have uninstalled and then reinstalled SmartPLS3 (64 bit version, since my PC is 64 bit), but to no avail.
I reinstalled to try to get access to the dialog described in the instructions that came with the licence, namely ...
To activate SmartPLS Professional:
1.) Save the attached file to a folder on your harddrive
2.) Run the SmartPLS 3 software
3.) In the initial licensing dialog choose 'Enter Professional License' and locate the file that you saved in step 1
4.) Now SmartPLS Professional is ready for you!
But step 3.) does not happen, i.e. there is no "initial licensing dialog" and SmartPLS simply opens up, pauses for a few seconds, then again displays the popup message that says I am using the student version.
I am more than happy to pay for this licence, but I would rather like it to work :-)
