Formative measure with dichotomous variables

I see many examples of formative constructs that consist of scale variables. Can dichotomous variables be used? For example, a measure of experience with organizational conflict might consist of:
1. Have you experienced conflict X in the past? (yes/no)
2. Have you experienced conflict Y in the past? (yes/no)
3. Have you experienced conflict Z in the past? (yes/no)
Aside from theoretical concerns, is it okay to set up formative constructs that include dichotomous variables rather than scale variables?
