calculation of linear composite scores

Post by dhenderson17 »

Hello all,

I have searched this forum for information on how to calculate a linear composite for a formative second order construct. My understanding is that factor scores or an average can be used. Here is an excerpt from my model (two formative first-order constructs which then map to one formative second-order construct):

Item1-->Formative first-order construct1-->Formative second-order construct 1
Item2-->Formative first-order construct 1-->Formative second-order construct 1
Item3--> Formative first-order construct 1-->Formative second-order construct 1
Item4-->Formative first-order construct 2-->Formative second-order construct 1
Item5-->Formative first-order construct 2-->Formative second-order construct 1
Item6-->Formative first-order construct 2-->Formative second-order construct 1

With reference to using the average approach to calculate linear composite scores for my above model, my understanding is that I would:

1)compute the average of items 1, 2, 3 for every participant response
2)Use the average of these items to represent sub-construct 1
3)compute the average of items 4, 5, 6 for every participant response
4)Use the average of these items to represent sub-construct 2
5)Compute the average of sub-construct 1 and sub-construct 2
6)Use this score (average computed in step 5) to represent the formative second-order construct 1

Any suggestions/comments are much appreaciated.

Thanks for your help!

Dave
