Questions about the implementation and application of the PLS-SEM method, that are not related to the usage of the SmartPLS software.

Item per construct

Hi All,

How many scal items is the minimum requirement statistically to be used in smartPLS, forexample if a construct is a formative of two or three subconstructs/scales. how many statements/items is needed to measure each subconstruct/scale.

In my case I have a construct called usage (which is part of a bigger model)... Usage construct consist or made from four subconstructs namely ( PP, PC,PL, CP)..the question.. is one statement for each subconstruct is enough statistically to give measurement for the construct(usgage) ?

If not how many is required.

Many thanks for your help.

Hi,
With formative indicators, the LV is defined by its indicators, and the number will be a matter of definition.

In the reflective way, the indicators are a sample of all possible indicators (from the domain of the definition of the LV).

PLS is “consistent at large”, that means that a “generous” number of indicators per LV should be used.

LOHMÖLLER, J.-B. Latent variable path modeling with partial least squares. Heidelberger: Physica-Verlag, 1989.
(P.215) “If there are three indicators, the estimate of the LV is too close of the data and the relations between LVs are underestimated.”

(p.333) 4 or 8 indicators.

(p.266) = at least 4 indicators

(p.265) about 4 indicators.

= at least 5 indicators (or reliability above 0.9 to minimize the attenuation).
