Cannot test multiple moderators at the same time!

Questions about the implementation and application of the PLS-SEM method, that are not related to the usage of the SmartPLS software.

Cannot test multiple moderators at the same time!

Post by coupae »

Hello there, I'd appreciate if you can kindly help me with the following issue.

I have a model which looks like Y is a function of X1 and X2. Also, I expect X3 to serve as a moderator on both X1->Y and X2->Y.

I can set up moderation in SmartPLS to test the effect of X3 on X1->Y and the effect of X3 on X2->Y, one at a time. However, when I set up the two moderation in SmartPLS at the same time, one interaction factor is blue while the other will be red. SmartPLS doesn't allow me to run the model.

I am confused as to why it happened. I am testing the same moderator for its effect on two different paths (X1->Y and X2->Y). The two moderation effects seem to be independent from each other. Why SmartPLS doesn't allow me to do it? And how can I get the model to run?

Thank you very much if you can help!

Should be possible to include multiple moderators for one DV (i.e., Y) with the same moderator variable (X3) as long as they address different predictor variables (X1 vs. X2). You have to make sure that you select the predictor to be X1 and X2. You cannot have two times the same moderating effect (i.e., using X1 twice as predictor with X3 as moderator).
