I found an easy way to install Smartpls on my mac (mountain lion) without having to use parallels and windows.
First, I tried Crossover as a wrapping tool, but that didn't work.
Then, I discovered Winebottler, a free, open source tool. It also wraps Windows applications so that they can be executed on your mac directly.
The procedure:
1) Download Smartpls.exe WITH JRE 6.0
2) Download and Install wine.app and winebottler.app (from http://winebottler.kronenberg.org)
3) Open the winebottler.app; go to 'advanced' then start a 'new prefix'
4) In winebottler: Select smartpls.exe
5) In winebottler: Choose "This is the actual program, copy it and all files that are in the same folder."
6) In winebottler: click on 'install' and give the newly created app a name
7) Open the just created app.
I tried it on 2 different macs; it works like a charm.
Cheers,
Stephan

The new SmartPLS 3 does now work on Mac OSX out of the box. Just download and install the DMG file from http://www.smartpls.com !
