Partial derivate plots of interactions

Questions about the implementation and application of the PLS-SEM method, that are not related to the usage of the SmartPLS software.

Partial derivate plots of interactions

Post by Tobjoh »

Dear all,

Does anybody know how to ‘plot’ interactions from the output of smartPLS? Using regression one usually calculates the partial derivate of the regression equation and plot simple slopes for three groups (+1stddev, mean and -1stddev) a la Aiken and West (1991). However, to that one needs to know the intercept (constant). I might be blind or plain stupid, but I can’t see any easy way to find or calculate this from the output in smartPLS. Since smartPLS only reports on std coefficients is the intercept then zero perhaps?

Hi,

Yes, the constant is zero because the results are standardized.

One option is to copy the unstandardized LV scores to another software to run the multiple regression and have the values that you need to draw the plot.

Some help to draw the plot

Is it possible to plot Simple Slopes in SmartPLS3?

[Using Smart PLS 2.0M3] I tried to plot a simple slope graph for a one-way interaction (1 DV, 1 IV, 1 Moderator).

Could anyone comment on the correctness of my approach?
1) I built the model in SmartPLS
2) I ran the PLS algorithm
3) I opened the report and copied the 'Latent Variable Scores (unstandardized)' including the interaction terms
4) I pasted the LV scores and interaction terms into SPSS
5) I ran linear regression with one dependent variable (1DV) and three independent variables (1 IV, 1 Moderator, 1 Interaction term)
6) I looked into the results for 'descriptive statistics' and 'coefficients'
7) I filled the required data (B values, Means, Std.dev) into one of the recommended online Excel sheets to print the graph

I think the procedure sounds reasonable.
With the SmartPLS 3 you get the unstandardized LV scores in the IPMA procedure. Moreovere, you will get there the unstandardized coefficients for the inner structural model and also means of the LV scores, so I think there is no need anymore to go to SPSS to fill the online Excel sheets.

Hi Guys,

I used a great little SPSS add in from Professor Jaccard.

He has some wonderful macro's and addin..s in there especially of a graphical and confidence interval nature

it is called zumastat

best regards

Simple Slope Interaction Plots for the standardized coefficients are now part of SmartPLS. It is a new feature of version 3.2.0.
