Mediation path

Post by zain »

Help Request
Path b (mediator --> outcome variable) is not significant in my mediation model. but path a (IV --> Mediator) shows significant relationship. I am not sure how to interpret this finding. Mediation did not work because path b was not significant. I need to explain findings in discussion section.

Hi,

Yes, there is no mediation if the path b are not significant. When the path a and path c significant, then the value of path c may be greater than both, so obviously there is no mediation.

I was bit confuse if only one Exogenous latent variable. For example if we have a model like this:

A--> (B, C) --> (D, E). A is formative, and the others (B, C, D, E) are all reflective. In this case do we assume that the only Exogenous is (A), or do we look at (B, C) as Exogenous to (D, E)?

(B, C) is a mediating variable, that's it.

Most important for analysing a mediation are the indirect effect (through the mediator, i.e., a*b) and the direct effect (i.e., c).
Zhao et. al provide the best framework for mediation analysis.
