Including control variables

Hi, there has been quite a lot of discussion on moderating effects in PLS. However, I'm still unsure how to include a bunch of control or context variables. In OLS, you typically have your hypothesized relation and then there are a number of controls that could have an impact on this relationship. T...

Hi, It was not my intention to suggest an implementation into SmartPLS (which - of course - would be nice) but to get an understanding of the underlying statistical rationale. Normally, when you enter a squared term into a multiple regression you test for a curvilinear relationship. That's why I tho...

Non-linear relationships with PLS

Do you have any experience in integrating a non-linear, i.e. a curvilinear, relationship into a PLS model? More specifically, I'm thinking about a structural model with several latent variables. One relationship is assumed to take on an inverted U shape, indicating that there is some kind of optimum...

Hi Nadine, Not necessarily binary variables. "Objective" just stands for anything that refers to a "hard" measure like turnover, number of patents etc. So no problem with 5-point-scales. But anyway, I would also be highly interested in your initial question whether a structural m...

It is the weights that are always used in PLS to calculate latent variable scores, never the loadings. Not necessarily. I exported the LV scores (estimated in Mode A) and did a correlation analysis between them and composite variables calculated "by hand" using the indicator values multip...

Re: Formative versus reflective

PLS Path Modeling determines the latent variable scores (as John says) always as weighted sum of its indicators. In Mode A, the weights are the correlations between the indicators and the inner estimation of the latent variable; in Mode B the weights are regression weights. Yes, in mode A the loadi...

I'm not quite sure if I understand your point. You typically handle multicollinearity by centering or standardizing your indicators which is automatically done by PLS when the option "mean=0, variance=1" for the variable treatment is selected. Moreover, a maximum variance inflation factor ...

Formative constructs with problematic indicator weights

I've run several PLS models with varying sets of data. Nearly in all models where formative constructs were employed, there are positive as well as negative indicator signs for any one construct. On the one hand, you have to clean up your measurement model before estimating the structural model. On ...

Thanks, John. Do you have a "classic" literature source at hand for the socio-economic status?

Constructs and "objective" measures in PLS

Have you ever entered "objective" data into a PLS model, e.g. sales/profits growth, R&D intensity growth etc.? My intention was to rely on that data gathered from databases for the dependent variables and have perceptual constructs as independent variables to avoid a single informant a...

Hi,

PLS can be used to analyze many different types of data such as binary coded data, categorical data or - of course - continuously coded data. For details see Falk, R.F. and Miller, N.B. (1992): A Primer for Soft Modeling, p. 32.

Best regards,
