It worked this time. :-) [It probably didn't like my phone number yesterday - it's a bit unclear what is required in that field and I entered it with a plus sign and the country code +61419504588 which would go straight to my handy from an international call. This morning I entered it as 0419504588 ...

I've tried to open a ticket, but it's stuck on the popup message "Please wait - it will take a second" !
I'll try again tomorrow.
In the meantime I can continue using SmartPLS2.

Can't activate professional licence
I have obtained a prof licence [thank you :-) ]. I have attempted to activate the licence several times now it via the 'Switch license' dialog, but the software reverts to the Student version. I have uninstalled and then reinstalled SmartPLS3 (64 bit version, since my PC is 64 bit), but to no avail....
